The Songkran festival
The Songkran festival in Thailand is the Thai new year festival. The Thai new year Day is 13 April every year and the holiday period for new year is 13 to 15 April. The Songkran celebration is rich with symbolic traditions. Mornings begins with visiting local temples and offering food to the Buddhist monks and pouring water on Buddha statues which represents purification and washing away the sins and bad luck.
The holiday is known for its water festival which is mostly celebrated by young people. Major streets are closed for traffic, and are used as arenas for water fights. People participate in this tradition by splashing water on each other. Traditional parades are held and Miss Songkran is crowned.
