The world's first space launch facility

The world's first and largest space launch facility, Baikonur Cosmodome, is located in Kazakhstan. The facility is leased by the Russians until 2050. Baikonur was originally built by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s as the base of operations for its space program. With numerous commercial, military and scientific missions being launched annually, under the current Russian space program, Baikonur remains a busy spaceport. All manned Russian spaceflights are launched from Baikonur.
