Fun book recommendation of the day
Breakfast of Champions, or Goodbye Blue Monday written by Kurt Vonnegut has two main characters: Dwayne Hoover and Kilgore Trout. The story happens in the fictional town of Midland City, Ohio. Dwayne Hoover is mentally unstable but an affluent businessman who owns much of Midland City. Kilgore Trout is a widely published, but otherwise virtually invisible writer. Kilgore is invited to deliver a speech in a local arts festival in Midland City. When he arrives in the city, he meets Dwayne and gives a copy of a novel he brought for the festival to him. The novel depicts a message from the Creator of the Universe explaining that the reader is the only individual in the universe with free will and that everyone else is a machine. Dwayne believes the novel to be factual and immediately goes on a violent rampage, severely beating his son, his lover, and many other people before being taken into custody.
The book is mainly about suicide, free will, mental illness, and social and economic cruelty. In the preface of the book, the author states that he tends to think of human beings as huge, rubbery test tubes, with chemical reactions happening inside. He calls the nature of free will into question. In the book, mankind is considered a biological machine! and the mental illness of Dwayne Hoover and society at large is attributed to an abundance of bad chemicals in the brain which is combined with bad ideas.
